Canada, Days of Darkness
Israel, Beaufort
Italy, The Unknown
Kazakhstan, Mongol
Poland, Katyn
Russia, 12
Serbia, The Trap
4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days, The Orphanage, Persepolis don't make the cut? Wow, I guess it wasn't their forte. 5 of these films will be nominees.

  2. They probably figured Persepolis was a shoo-in for the animated category.

I'm not too surprised that they didn't include The Orphanage. They seem to have kept away from the more 'mainstream foreign' films. And frankly it wasn't that great. The cinematography is lovely, Belen Rueda is great and it's a decent enough ghost story. But it wasn't outstanding in my opinion.

  3. What are weird choices here! I wouldn't bet any of them could make a final five. And as the russian, i'm dissapointed that they choose "12". I saw plenty of better russian films this year. 12 is just so pathetic and manipulative, i barely sit through it. And Mongol is even worse, just useless rip-off of 2006' Nomad, dusty, boring and wannabe-epic picture about people no one really care.
Hope it would be Brasil who win, haven't seen that definite picture, but love their previous efforts.

  4. I think the winner is between Austria (NBR List), Brazil or even Israel (Winner for Best Director at Berlinale 07')

"Persepolis" still strong for Aminated Picture, but the exclusion for "4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days"?

    Two big and dissapotting surprises:

    My predictions:
    *Austria
    *Brazil
    *Israel
    *Poland
    *Italy or Serbia
