Today's News: First few Inglourious Basterds' Reviews Trickle In

Right now, it's sitting at a mediocre 68% on RT (no score yet on MC; and will probably crack the top ten on IMDB). I'm still looking forward to it, but does anyone think it's unfair that QT is constantly expected to make movies in the grain of Pulp Fiction? Or not. He did consider this film his masterpiece.

  1. I'm not really a Tarantino fan I still think his best days are ahead, but it is tough that everyone expects him to Make Pulp Fiction 2. It's almost how everybody expected Scorsese to make Raging Bull 2-5...but the thing with Scorsese is he was just that good...and dynamic. Tarantino is not really that dynamic as a film maker.

  2. I think what is interesting about Tarantino is he truly makes the films that HE solely wants to make. I think what happened was that his earlier films got heaps and heaps of awards--which was all well and good--yet I think that QT would have made the films he has made regardless. Why else would someone make a 3-and-a-half-hour kung-fu epic or an ode to 70's grindhouse cinema? We genuinely have someone who makes movies that he wants to see.

So in answer to the question--I dont think it matters that he is expected to make movies in the grain of Pulp Fiction. He is going to make what he wants to make regardless. His films aren't firing on all cylinders all of the time--but they do so enough to let him do what he wants to do.

  3. Well I think that this film is in fact a masterpiece in the vein of Pulp Fiction, I think that all his films are. But people are way to harsh on him and it drives me crazy, his films are far better cinematic experiences then any other filmmaker, no one makes films like Tarantino does.

  4. I agree. I think QT offers something special in all his films. Pulp Fiction was incredibly fresh when it was released, so it's kind of unfair to measure his latest films against it.

I do appreciate that QT makes whatever movie he wants. That has special appeal in it of itself. He doesn't compromise his vision, and I think all his movies will be better appreciated in the long run.
