  4. I can't believe you bet on Viola Davis. I mean, she was really awesome, but I just saw The Reader yesterday I was blow away by Kate's performance! I knew she was going to take the Globe and that she will win the SAG and finally the Oscar. I'm so so happy for her!

  5. Myles: Cristina is written without an "h" because the title is in spanish, not english

  11. Overjoyed for Kate Winslet's double win- although disapointed that 'Rev Road' was otherwise snubbed.

  13. Ugh...I am the only one that is over all this love for Slumdog? This is now the second awards show in a row where I have sat watching and been frustrated because of the sweep of the movie! I really just don't understand, lol. I'm really hoping that the Oscars don't follow the same pattern for this highly overrated flick!

I was generally overjoyed by all the other wins tonight, though, especially Kate Winslet, Heath, and "The Wrestler" by Springsteen. All are very deserving!

  14. I'm a little tired of this sweep as well, but it's one of those movies that has captured lightning in a bottle. Wait for the SAG awards to prove the true test of this movie.

I'm so excited about Colin Farrell winning. I loved In Bruges. Also, the Kate Winslet double win was very surprising, and it poses an interesting scenario, if the same thing happens at the Oscars. What a first that'll be!

  15. I'm with you, Adam... I don't understand what makes Slumdog Millionaire so wonderful. It was enjoyable, sure, but nothing spectactular or unique.

So excited for Kate Winslet though. I've been saying for years that she's the best working actress out there, and it's good to see at least one of the major awards agree.

  16. I have your answer: Slumdog IS different. In a year in which so few good films have been realease, the critics have chosen different this time. The other movies bring all something that has been touched before.

    Thats what i suppose

  17. I'm so happy and surprise for Kate's double win. I haven't seen RR yet, but she total deserved it for The Reader. Altought this was pretty exciting, I don't think Oscar will give her two awards on the same ceremony, regardless if she diserves that or not.

I love Slumdog Millionaire, but I agree that it's not the masterpiece critics say it is. But I do think it's the best picture of the buch. And definitely way better than Benjamin Button (that Forrest Gump wannabe flick)

  18. I think that the Slumdog Millionaire love fest is somewhat in part a reflection of the times. The favored 5 to be nominated for Best Picture at this point are Benjamin Button, The Dark Knight, Slumdog Millionaire, Milk, and Frost/Nixon. All except Slumdog deal with really relevant issues (though to some extent I think people may be reaching too far when they make the socio-political connections with TDK and I personally believe that Nolan had no intentions of making a politically relevant film but rather just tell the best story possible). Benjamin Button is an epic tragedy, The Dark Knight is incredibly dark and ends somber but with a sense of hope, Milk is tragic in the end, and deals with an unfortunate political situation we are STILL finding ourselves in. Frost/Nixon touches upon the hubris and corruption of politicians. Yet Slumdog remains this happy film that all at once a drama, a rags to riches story, a love story, and an all around feel-good film. It makes you happy and celebratory at the end. There's some dark parts, but it all works out in the end. I think people are jumping all over it because not only were there so few great films this year, but its one of the few that makes you smile at the end.

Personally, I think that The Dark Knight was the best of the year. If I had my choice of nominees, I would say

    The Dark Knight
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
    The Wrestler
    Slumdog Millionaire
    Milk

I would give the big prize personally to either TDK, The Wrestler or Benjamin Button. I think that right now, the love for Slumdog comes out of a desperate need for a simple story with a happy end. People need that right now. But IMO, time will favor Benjamin Button, The Dark Knight, and The Wrestler as the true masterpieces of the year.

  19. Milk is different. That's all I have to say.

Well, maybe I'll say a little more. It's different. It's better acted. It has better directing. It was much better written. And it speaks to one of the paramount issues of our times. Truly the most deserving film that has been released this year, and I wholeheartedly hope that the Oscar bunch has recognized that fact and that they pass over the Slumdog fad.

  20. I just caught Milk today, and I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, and James Franco were all great in it. I personally preferred Slumdog to Milk, but that's just me. IMO, this year's Best Picture contenders are so widespread across genres that its nearly impossible to pick just one above the others. I can tell you that while I may have loved TDK the most, I loved Benjamin Button and The Wrestler essentially equally. But they are all such different filsm that how could you really pick just one to call the "best"?

  21. I dont want Kate Winslet to Win a supporting oscar...She's one of our great leading Ladies...but Revolutionary Road sux. Why is everyone acting like this is the only year for her to do it..like she has to win this year...it's not like she's not gonna be amazing next year. And she should win lead..just not for revolutionary road...if she's nominated for the reader than cool.

  22. I think Kate just secured herself the Oscar, the question is for what performance? Personally, I think she will win for The Reader because, well, cuz it is a Holocaust movie lol

  23. Revolutionary Road may not be the best film that Kate Winslet has ever been in, but it is definitely one of her best performances. April is so layered... troubled but hopeful, joyful and depressed, screaming one moment and apologetic the next. Kate easily turns in her most nuanced performance yet.
