A couple of underseen indie gems hit DVD this week!

The Sundance Film Festival had the premiere for the top two picks this week on DVD, and neither caught on much like they might have (in fact, one was barely released). Both are superb picks, but only one can be my PICK OF THE WEEK. The movie that gets the esteemed honor this week is:
Good Dick
Previously released earlier in the year solely on the website of the filmmaker, this quirky romantic dramedy tells the tale of two troubled young people, an introverted and eccentric woman who likes to rent softcore pornography, and a kind, lonely, essentially homeless guy who works at the store she rents from and develops a desire to begin a relationship with her. As they slowly begin to get closer (though not in any conventional way) the film gets more and more fascinating, as what could have been a generic mismatched couple flick becomes something much more. It's a film that rewards patience, and is much better than I can describe it as. Definitely give it a shot as it only was given a one week release in 2008 before being sold online for a while. Now it's out for the world to see, and hopefully many people will.
-Also out worth a strong mention is Sugar, the second film from the writers/director of the acclaimed film Half Nelson. This is a baseball movie, but unlike any I've ever encountered before. It's a true character study of the immigrant baseball world, as well as one of the best looks at minor league baseball yet. It's not quite as good as Half Nelson, but it's well worth watching, since it didn't catch on really in theaters.
-Rounding out the releases are State of Play, Sin Nombre, and Earth. State of Play is a very good film until a weak ending hurts it, but it's still a good political thriller worth checking out. Sin Nombre is an average thriller but nothing more, and Earth is basically a slimmed down film version of the television program. None are bad, but only State of Play is really worth looking into.
-My Vintage pick, in honor of this week's release of the film Extract by Mike Judge, is his last movie, the under seen futuristic satire Idiocracy. I liked this more than Office Space, as it was a slightly better satire. He's improving with each film, so Extract has a chance to be very good. Those not in the mood for comedy, my alternate pick (in honor of nothing) is The Contender, one of the best political thrillers ever. Joan Allen is electric as the would be vice president being grilled in the confirmation process by a politician desperate to bring her down with a sex scandal. It's really amazing stuff.
-What will you be watching on DVD this week?

  2. Random note about Sugar...the DVD is re-rated to be a PG-13, while the Blu-Ray is R...literally almost no difference, but something to make a note of perhaps if you're unsure which to go with.
