  1. Joey, I don't want to sound like an elitist, holier than thou jerk. But do you have like a kind of bias against foreign language films? I mean not one foreign language film (Slumdog is only kinda) has been on any of your posted top ten since 2005, and you seem kind of dismissive of foreign language dvd releases (The Class, and Sin Nombre are two recent ones). And when you posted your top 30 not that long ago for the decade, there wasn't a foreign language film there either.

Again, i'm not trying to put down your opinion, but I just find it odd when there have been so many great artistic achievement in foreign language films...I just am kinda surprised that none have wowed you i guess.

  2. I think your point has some merit, though I'd argue that just because a film doesn't crack my top 10, doesn't mean it's not an achievement that I recognize as being high quality. I see plenty of foreign language films, both as a result of my college degree and ones that I seek out on my own, and by and large, they're as good as American films, just that the volume of such is different. For instance, the two films you mentioned from my DVD articles I had no issues with, but both underwhelmed me to different degrees (we all have our films that we randomly don't love). However, I gave a rather glowing review to Paris 36 earlier in the year, and a few years ago The Diving Bell and the Butterfly just missed my top 10 (it hit at number 13 I believe).

Just to show I don't particularly dislike foreign flicks, here are a few random ones that I've enjoyed quite a bit, both old and recent:

    The 400 Blows
    The Battle of Algiers
    Cinema Paradiso
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
    Eyes Without a Face
    Irreversible
    Life is Beautiful
    Nikita
    Pan's Labyrinth
    Paris 36
    Raise the Red Lantern
    Rashomon
    Sugar (if that counts)
The Wedding Banquet (perhaps only half a foreign film)
    Wings of Desire
    Y tu mama tambien

    What are some of yours?

  3. Oh see, I was just kind of putting little weird things together in my head. I hope you weren't offended. I know a top ten can only mean so much, it just struck me as odd when I was looking through your lists. I don't doubt that you've seen many (probably more than me since i'm only 19) I guess I just can't think of a time where I remember you raving about a foreign film I guess. I suppose i'd like to hear more passionate talking about foreign films in general, from most oscar/film blogs/sites. They kinda get the short end of the stick as a whole when it comes to awards, distribution/release, etc.

Personally I love (for this decade)

    Talk to Her
    Volver
Bad Education (I'm an Almodovar obsessive)
    In the Mood for Love
    Amelie
    Let the Right One In
    Y Tu Mama Tambien
    Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    The Lives of Others
The Class (that's kinda why I mentioned it lol)
    4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days
    Persepolis
    Diving Bell and the Butterfly
    Cache
    Pan's Labyrinth
    Kings and Queen
    Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring

There's other i'm forgetting. Talk to Her,Crouching Tiger and In the Mood for Love are also in my top ten overall of the decade (so far)

Again, I really hope you didn't take offence to what I said earlier. I'm just a bit of an advocate for more exposure/passion to foreign films.

  4. I definitely have some catching up to do in the foreign language department. Let the Right One In and I've Loved You So Long were two of my favorites from '08 and I also loved The Lives of Others.

  5. In terms of the Best Actor race, I'm surprised you guys still have Depp in the top five. Not that I disagree with it, but I am inclined to think he will not get a nomination.

As far as Duvall goes, the early buzz seems like, with a distributor, he is a major contender.

  6. Brokeback Mountain now becomes the film with the most ACCA awards with 7. While the choice between Hoffman and Ledger was difficult, I still would have gone with Hoffman. But on that note, Ledger becomes the first double winner in for two different years (Winslet beat him as the first double winner).

  7. Interesting discussion guys. Foreign films get the short end of the stick on most Oscar sites (including ours). A lot of writers are probably intimidated by the number of foreign films released every year. Moreover, unless a foreign film is getting some sort of buzz, it's tough to even know about. I try to write a review for at least 2 foreign films a year. I'm going to try to step my game up, but we'll need help from everyone. If you know of a foreign film that needs watching and a review, then feel free to recommend. I finished up a review on the city of life and death. I recently watched a french film titled Martyrs and a Japanese film titled Suspect X. I'll get a review of both of them ASAP.
