It's a pretty rough week (again) on DVD

Well, after a few good weeks, we must come back down to Earth. The releases this week on dvd leave much to be desired, and in fact, the best film of the week isn't a new release. I won't make it my PICK OF THE WEEK just because I try to avoid double dips getting the honor, but you'll read about that movie in a bit. As for the top spot this week, it begrudgingly goes to:
Crank 2: High Voltage
Like the original Crank, it's very much dumb fun, though not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination. It gets the top spot out of some form of respect for the sheer lunacy that the film gets away with. If you think it might be your cup of tea, you might get a kick out of it, but don't expect anything wonderful.
-The only other new release this week is Dance Flick, and while it's not particularly an awful satire film, it's definitely not a good one. There are one or two laughs, but that's certainly not enough for any sort of recommendation.
-The actual best film out this week is a re-release of the classic Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks. It was a staple of my childhood, and it's a great film for both kids and adults to rediscover now on DVD. Definitely pick it up if you don't already own it.
-My Vintage pick this week is, in honor of the release Friday of Kate Beckinsale's long delayed film Whiteout, actually a collection of good movies that the actress has been in. Instead of picking just one, choose from any (or all) of the following flicks: Nothing But The Truth (her best performance of her career), Snow Angels, Click, and Laurel Canyon. They are all good to great films, and she holds her own in each.
-What will you be watching on DVD this week?

  1. Tough lineup to pick from...But I did see Nothing But The Truth a couple of months ago and I agree that not only was Beckinsale great, but the film as a whole was utterly compelling; definitely worth watching.

  2. agreed, one of the few films that I immediately wanted to re-watch as soon as it ended

If I had seen it before the end of the year, it would have made my top 10 of 2008 list

  3. Yeah, it could've come very close to a #9 or #10 spot, but certainly an honorable mention. If it would have had more theaters I bet that Beckinsale and Dillon would've gotten some more recognition -- which they both deserved.
