...to become the highest grossing film of all time. Titanic has $600,788,188 as its domestic gross, but Avatar has $601,141,551 and counting! It did it in just 47 days, which is stunning. It's also well ahead of Titanic in terms of worldwide gross, so the king of the world now has another crown to wear. No matter what you think of Cameron or the film, this is quite the achievement.
-Congrats to all involved!

Who knows what its final tally will be...
ReplyDelete687 Million
ReplyDeleteQuite possibly.
ReplyDeleteI just think there's a certain amount of irony around this in that for over a decade people have been talking about what's going to beat Titanic, and year-in year-out there has always been this kind of conjecture, with some films coming close (TDK and LOTR:TROTK) yet the one film to finally do it was another James Cameron film!
ReplyDeleteVery true sir.
ReplyDeleteand the next film to do it will be Avatar 2: Return to Pandora ...
ReplyDeleteor Terminator 5 : The Legend of Curly's Gold
My money is on Terminator 5: The Legend of Curly's Gold. Starring the Governor, Billy Crystal, and a surprise film return from Gene Wilder (wearing makeup to look like Jack Palance).
ReplyDelete-Robbie
Well played to you both.
ReplyDeleteTerminator 5: The Legend of Curly's Gold is no match for Old Yeller 2: Judgement Day. Duh.
ReplyDeleteAnd on the other end of the scale, I predict the next biggest flop will be--
ReplyDeleteThe Great Gatsby 2: Gats ta Get Dat Booty
I find these stats so misleading, as it doesn't at account for inflation, which means the record is topped relatively frequently. If you look at adjusted inflation, it will try to pass Fantasia for the #20 spot this weekend. Still got a ways till it reaches the likes of Star Wars, The Sound Of Music, and Gone With The Wind. I doubt it ever reaches that threshold. FYI, Titanic is number 6 on that list: http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm
ReplyDeleteInflation stats are themselves a joke though. Gone for the Wind for example was re-released like 20 times and NO ONE takes that into account.
ReplyDeleteAlso thinks like competition from other media, availability of downloads, more choices of movies to go and see etc. etc.
Let Avatar or Titanic get released every December for 20 years and see what it does to the GWTW inflation stats ... pfff
