An interesting assortment, to say the least...
ReplyDeleteIt's a different list. No Avatar, No Up, and they loved A Serious Man. Christoph Waltz was the only winner that seemed to be on the same page as everyone else. Wonder if this means anything for A Serious Man at the Academy?

It's almost as if they had a different opinion than I did...
ReplyDeleteNo worries, I'm fully aware I'm in the minority. Just like how movies like Where the Wild Things Are and Moon split some people, this one did too, I just happened to fall outside of the majority on this one. It happened before, and it will happen again. If I or other didn't occasionally have unpopular takes on film, film criticism would be a pretty boring thing...
I know it's contrary to conventional wisdom, but I wouldn't be shocked if this year's acting award surprise is Firth over Bridges. I think it's the most likely acting upset.

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say impossible...but 95% sure he wins. If not, I'd lean towards Renner as the upset more than Firth.
ReplyDeleteI understand that Bridges deserves to win for a lifetime of work. But if we're voting based exclusively a single performance, than it should be a race between Firth and Clooney. I won't be dissappointed if Bridges wins, though.

ReplyDeleteI get the feeling that you just plain don't like "A Single Man?" I was so deeply moved by Firth's performance in it, particularly the much-discussed scene on the telephone. And, as much as I liked "The Hurt Locker," I didn't find anything particularly impressive about Renner. It was a fine performance, but not something I'll remember in a few years. Also, I really felt like he wasn't particularly a lead, at least not any more than the Anthony Mackie (they had almost the same amount of screen time).
ReplyDeleteIf you mean me, why would you think that? I liked it just fine, and was predicting Tom Ford for a nomination at one point, and Colin Firth is one of my favorite actors. I just found that I preferred more performances this year (Renner's included) to his, and of the nominated 5, I find that the nomination is his reward this year. Even if it was my favorite film of the year, I'd still have that feeling about Firth, because that's what the situation appears to be, and it'd be disingenuous of me to make my personal opinion into the facts that I provide to you guys.
