Editors Cut Out Atonement...

The American Cinema Editors nominations were revealed this morning. We don't need to tell you how big of a deal is the direct correlation between a Best Editing and Best Picture nomination at the Oscars.

BEST EDITED FEATURE FILM (DRAMATIC)

Into the Wild – Paramount Vantage - Jay Cassidy, A.C.E.
Michael Clayton – Warner Bros. Pictures - John Gilroy, A.C.E.
No Country for Old Men – Paramount Vantage/Miramax - Roderick Jaynes
There Will Be Blood - Paramount Vantage/Miramax - Dylan Tichenor, A.C.E.

BEST EDITED FEATURE FILM (COMEDY OR MUSICAL)

Hairspray – New Line Cinema - Michael Tronick, A.C.E.
Juno – Fox Searchlight Pictures - Dana E. Glauberman
Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End – Disney - Craig Wood & Stephen Rivkin, A.C.E.

  1. Diving Bell lost some momentum. The ACE nominations matched the BP nominees 3/5 last year, so it doesn't mean the film won't be nominated. But there haven't been any BP winners not nominated here since Ordinary People in the early 80's. It may have more of a shot at the lone director spot than at a BP nom.

No Country for Old Men is looking solid as ever, with the most guild and precursor nominations. Into the Wild and TWBB are next in line, solidifying their positions nicely. Michael Clayton and Juno are also gaining strength.

I'm sad to see no Atonement, and I'm hoping that it might be the exception to the rule of pictures that get into the Oscars without guild nods.

As of now, if I had to predict the BP nominees today based on the precursors and guilds, it would be:

    No Country for Old Men
    Into the Wild
    There Will Be Blood
    Michael Clayton
    Juno

Fighting to knock out one of these for a spot would be Atonement, Diving Bell and Sweeney Todd.

  3. Alison, they predicted 4 out of 5 last year if you count Little Miss Sunshine in the Comedy or Musical category. (Oh, so that's what it was.)

And anyway, if you're nominating 10 movies, you ought to have a pretty good chance of getting 5 right (same deal with the GG's.)

  4. Thanks, slobone. I'm not commending the ACE on its brilliance in predicting nominees. I'm looking at the other guild nominations combined with this to guess at what may be nominated this year. The five I list have the most guild and precursor love so far, in order of the number.

  5. Alison, if what you are saying about the BP nominees based on al the guilds combined were to actually happen, I would be a happy, make that very happy man. But I would prefer if Diving Bell or Atonement were picked instead of Michael Clayton. Then I would be ecstatic!
