  1. Thats a bit disheartening. I guess Sweeney Todd just wasn't to the liking of the guilds. I'm surprised Joe Wright wasn't nominated. Gilroy seems a bit random, as he had no buzz before.

  2. Tim Burton should've been nominated over Tony Gilroy. The love for all things Michael Clayton just baffles me.

  3. I underestimated Gilroy, I picked Wright over him, and suspected a Burton snub.

  5. Michael Clayton was a good move, just not a memorable one, in my opinion. The pick for Tony Gilroy is really random. First time directors rarely get an oscar nomination, so I say that Burton is still in the race.

  7. Wright was snubbed, in my opinion. I'm rooting for his nod at the Oscars.

  8. Yeah I think Joe Wright should replace Schnabel, and Burton should replace Gilroy. Atonement was a pretty great movie. Not something on the level of NCFOM, Sweeney Todd, or TWBB, but great nonetheless.

  9. first time directors may not get nominated a lot, but they do get nominated more often then say, Tim Burton...I don't know, just a thought. In my opinion the man who got snubbed is Sidney Lumet.

  10. I was very disappointed that Lumet got snubbed, Aaron, moreso than Ridley (who is also overdue).

The Oscars don't necessarily line up 5/5 with the DGA's. In fact, the consensus seems to be that the DGA more often lines up pretty closely with Oscar's BP lineup, rather than the Director lineup. Maybe AMPAS will remember the great veteran Lumet.

  11. I still think Wright will walk away with the Oscar nod instead of Gilroy. Glad PTA got recognized, though!

  12. yea i dont think the fact that Atonement is Joe Wright's first really crafted film (although Pride and Prejudice was an honorable effort)has anything to do with his chances. Sam Mendes was nominated and won for American Beauty and he had never even made a theatrical film...
I do feel that Gilroy is just really an unwelcomed suprise...Tim Burton deserves it in my opinion, not only the fact that Sweeney Todd was very well done, but just in pure consideration of his versatile and distinct career. Also in comparison to Julian Schnabel, Joe Wrights talent is inferior, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is probably the most expertly crafted and visually compelling then any other film this year, other then No Country For Old Men and Into the Wild. Overall i feel that Tim Burton should've gotten the nomination over Gilroy, but I am content with the other nominations, although there is always the inevitable snub, Lumet being the only viable one in my opinion this year.
