  2. is it just me or was there no Sweeney Todd for best picture? While I thought that movie was a dissapointment, I thought it would at least be on the long list for best picture? Does this in any way affect its Oscar chances?

  3. Anonymous, certain films haven't been released in the UK yet so they weren't included. Gone Baby Gone is one of those. According to a commenter from the UK over at AD, the film's release was delayed there due to a superficially similiar child abduction case there (it was originally supposed to be released there in Oct/Nov). With no cinema release in 2007 the film was apparently ineligible so Amy Ryan couldn't be nominated. Possibly next year.

  4. To clarify, the film has been delayed indefinitely. Since it has no release date yet, it's ineligible.

  5. Sweeney Todd hasn't gotten an international release or even a US wide release. BAFTA isn't going to kill Sweeney Todd's chances at best picture. As I pointed out yesterday, we need to look to the DGA, PGA, and WGA awards for a better indicator as to the status of certain films that were released late and not screened a ton in advance.

  6. But Johnny Depp is still on the list for best actor, so the question of eligibility is answered with that fact.

After seeing Sweeney Todd, I got a vibe that it might not be nominated for best picture, because I felt that it wasn't as good as we all expected. I know that BAFTA isn't a huge precursor and all, but the fact that it was completely left off the long list of 15+ films for best picture tells me that maybe its campaign isnt as strong as expected.

  8. Anonymous, I'm not what you what mean by that, care to clarify? Anyways, I htink Sweeney is safe in terms of Best Picture race. I'd love to see it win, but being realistic I know it won't. It's a lock for a lot of nominations, but a bit up in the air for wins. Though despite what a lot of people are saying about DDL being unstoppable, I really think this is going to be the year for Depp to win. I've just been getting the feeling that the academy isn't going to embrace DDL as much as critics have. To respond to redlightning9243, I have to disagree with you about Sweeney Todd's quality. It was as good and even better than most people expected, it just was the secret oscar contender of the year, much like Letters From Iwo Jima. Released late, kept a bit of a secret. I can almost gaurantee it will make the best picture five come nominations time. Plus, seeing as how it got a lot of HFPA love and NBR love, plus a ton of other nominations from the BAFTA, I'd say it's good and safe. American Gangster, on the other hand, was a bit of a disappointment. It had the potential to be incredible, but fell just short of great and was only good and highly entertaining. Sweeney Todd was a great film, any way you slice it. Of course, like any other film in history, ther are those who didn't like it and these days when people don't like a film they aren't middle of the road about it, they usually despise it. Trust me, Sweeney Todd will make the short list come oscar time. If it doesn't consider me wrong. If it does, I told you so. lol

  9. Actual Sweeney Todd did really good here. They didn't send Sweeney Todd screeners to BAFTA memebers. This is why it isn't in the Pic/Dir races. So, this means it did really good (various categories) considering the screeners weren't sent.

  10. So why is Johnny in the shortlist for Best Actor?
