Like I said before, he's not my first choice (I probably would have gone older and gone with Jon Hamm), but Marvel could have done a lot worse than Evans...
I thinks it's the worst casting in any of the Marvel films thus far. I know they really wanted to stay young with the casting, but I really can't take take Chris Evans seriously. Especially considering the other actors he is going to have to order around in the Avengers film, can he really stand toe to toe with the likes of RDJ, Samuel Jackson, and (if he chooses to do the film) Edward Norton? If they wanted to stay young I would have preferred Krasinski putting on the muscle and taking on the role, or change the mythos slightly and go with Aaron Eckhart.
Personally, I don't mind it all that much, considering one important fact - Chris Evans does have some talent as an actor (if you don't believe me, go see "Sunshine"). I don't know that much about the character or his origin, but from what I do know, Jon Hamm would have been a perfect choice. Nonetheless, this could maybe work, unless Joe Johnston fucks everything up, which could very easily happen.
Personally I feel, as a comic nerd, that this doubling up is a major no no. He's the Human Torch for crying out loud. Chris Evans, you can't have two comic book characters you greedy, greedy man. Shame, shame, shame.
Joshua: Sunshine is the main reason I'm not actively upset about this. As long as the script is decent enough for him to take seriously, I can begrudgingly see it working.
And lest we all forget, I'm fairly sure Ryan Reynolds is at least three different characters in the Marvel universe that I can think of. Also consider that Rebecca Romijn and Ben Foster were in both Punisher and X-Men. So they haven't really minded doubling up on their casting choices. Not to mention that different films are under different studios. I don't think Fantastic Four is looking at any crossover potential anytime soon.
Oddly enough, Ryan Reynolds was cast as both myself and Myles in the film version of The Awards Circuit, so he's in just about everything these days...
Myles & Joey: Although my thoughts on "Sunshine" are not stellar (a great film buried beneath a bunch of story developments which hurt the film badly), I feel that the acting in that film is all-around great. Very impressive performances from the entire cast, especially from Cillian Murphy, Cliff Curtis, and Chris Evans.
Who would you like to see be the main villain in the next Batman film?

ReplyDeleteOn the fence really : but he' already the Torch so, huh?
ReplyDeleteMitch: I can see him being either really good or really bad.
ReplyDeleteJoshua: Sunshine is an excellent reference, since he was great in that.
ReplyDeleteNathan: Hopefully this film won't suck like the Fantastic 4 flicks though...
ReplyDeleteInsurrbution: Indeed he is...

Much obliged...and I also have a complicated relationship with Sunshine, though I enjoyed the acting quite a bit.
