RIP The Lovley Bones
ReplyDeletewhat a damn shame
Maybe weta was to busy working on AVATAR...
Isn't Coraline an animated film? Are those even eligible for Visual Effects Oscars? That feels like cheating to me.
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck is in Sherlock Holmes that merits any consideration?
Why the hell are G-Force and GI Joe on this list? Anyone who actually watched either one will know that the special effects were so poor they could be considered a step backwards for Visual Effects as an art form.
The Lovely Bones snub baffles me as well. If Angels & Demons and Sherlock Holmes can get in, they should at least give it a mention.
Everything else is fine. Carry on.
More or less, you guys said it all, though I have enough issues with The Lovely Bones after seeing it to not mind it being omitted here...
ReplyDeleteThis is surprising, I thought Lovely Bones was a lock to get nominated, and the only competition Avatar had for the win.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, The Lovely Bones had at least two instances where it seemed clear that Ronan was on a set and standing behind a green screen...maybe the voters noticed?
ReplyDeleteBut compared to the visual effects of GI Joe? Granted, the Eiffel Tower scene was convincing, but everything else in that movie was so obviously CGI, I felt like I was watching a video game.
ReplyDeleteEven if you didn't like the movie, even if the quality was lesser than it could've been, the visual effects artists shouldn't be the ones penalized for it. They did a great job at creating a beautiful looking film, and it really really suprises me to not see them in the running.
I suppose if all was fair in the world, my picks would be Avatar, 2012, and Transformers.
Better than G.I. Joe? Of course...my picks would be Avatar, Star Trek, and Where the Wild Things Are.
ReplyDeleteTo answer Casey's question about "Coraline", I think they're taking the same route the Academy did when they nominated "The Nightmare Before Christmas" in the same category. It really doesn't make much sense to me either, but I don't think it will be nominated.
ReplyDeleteI saw "The Lovely Bones" yesterday, and Joey's right, a lot of the effects were quite obvious. There were instances in which I was thinking to myself that none of that looks real. It was very shocking coming from the man who convinced everyone that Middle Earth could exist. The film itself was extremely uneven, but that's a whole other story...
Contrary to most peoples' beliefs, I thought the effects work in "G.I. Joe" was actually quite good, with the exception of the desert sequences. In all honesty, those looked terrible to me.
My nominated films would be:
"Avatar"
"Star Trek"
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"
Sorry, I misread, I was answering Myles' question...
ReplyDeleteAvatar
ReplyDeleteHarry Potter & the Half Blood Prince
Where The Wild Things Are
Thanks Joshua
ReplyDeleteAvatar
ReplyDeleteWild Things
and dare I dream? District 9
If not then Transformers I guess, though Star Trek would be nice.
