  1. Kudos for Jeremy Renner but Up In The Air got snubed in the ensemble category.wow

  2. Yes, the lack of Up in the Air for ensemble is interesting. My only thought is that they nominated the three big one's from the movie individually so maybe they thought best ensemble was redundant? I don't know.

  3. Yes, Up in the Air was an odd exclusion, but got honored individually, so it didn't hurt it any.

  4. Kruger's an interesting (and in my opinion great) wild card choice. Though if I had to guess today, she'll probably be the only one of these actors to be excluded from the Oscar noms.

  6. I liked Kruger's nomination a lot. Even if she was the second best actress in the movie (the best true supporting though).

I really liked her performance, in all phases.

I was stoked to see Renner. It seems like Mackie won't be this year's Michael Shannon in the Best Supporting Race.

Hurt Locker's ensemble has to strengthen the love for the movie though, right? I don't think Up in the Air was weakened - with all the individual noms - but it's wrong to infer that it's not at least somewhat negative that it didn't get the ensemble nod.

Frankly, if Hurt Locker somehow took the ensemble...it makes me think it's the clear cut Best Picture front runner.

    Just thinkin' out loud...

  7. All fair points, they make sense.

It's great for Matt Damon to be nominated for at least one movie. It doesn't matter which one, but this better lead to an Oscar nomination. As one of the greatest actors of his, or any, generation it's a sin that he only has one Oscar nomination thus far in his career.

It also looks like Woody Harrelson is a lock for an oscar nomination, he's been included in all nominations thus far.

  8. Exchange Julianne Moore for Krueger and I think this could very well be our Oscar lineup for all the acting categories right here.

  9. So awesome to see Diane Kruger here!!!

  10. It's tough ... I see Bigelow being much more likely to win than the film ... with up in the air taking it ... but it would be hard for them to not want to reward Reitman best director considering he's 3 for 3

with 10 nominees though, maybe BP and BD won't match much at all anymore

and 12 years later, will Cameron's king of the world speech still hurt him ... :)

  11. I personally agree that one shouldn't read too much into Up in the Air's exclusion. When you think about it, it only has like three main characters, and all of them got nominated. It's not really a film that has an ensemble: it's a character study. It's notable, but it's hardly damaging. The film is still a lock to be nominated.

Agreed with mitch that switching in Julianne Moore could very well make this the Oscar lineup. I'm iffy on Sandra Bullock, but otherwise these same nominees, give or take, have shown up at all the major precursors. Very excited for Jeremy Renner. Diane Kruger did seem to come out of nowhere (especially when Melanie Laurent blew her out of the water), but she's unlikely to win or get nominated elsewhere, so she can be safely disregarded. Perhaps this is just SAG showing their support for the film?

So while this may now be a safe group of nominees, I urge you all to KEEP ON YOUR GUARD. The Academy loves throwing wild cards at us, and any one of these could be swapped out for someone we'd totally forgotten about. Don't get too comfortable, we still have time to go yet before nominations.

  12. I hope the love for Inglorius Bastrds helps Laurents get a nomination comescar time, but in supporting.

If this love carrisover to the Oscars, it could happen.

  13. I cannot understand this love for Matt Damon in Invictus. His character does nothing and it's a completely bland performance. How in the world he keeps getting nominated instead of Alfred Molina or Christian McKay is beyond me. It is an interesting race, given this and the Globes matched up exactly, but the Damon thing is a disgrace.

Other than that Kruger curveball, this is a pretty tame list that will probably end up being the Oscar lineup. As much as I'd want Sam Rockwell to pull a Tommy Lee Jones, it's unlikely since the only spot he could possibly take is Renner, which is unlikely since Renner's got a Best Picture frontrunner.

  14. I wouldn't exactly call it a disgrace, but I'd agree that he's far less deserving this year, and that the character in the movie is actually hurt by having such a big name in the role.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oh, and Michael Clayton (another Clooney film) had its three stars nominated but missed out on the Ensemble nod also, so I wouldn't be too worried about Up in the Air's chances.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The worry about the Up in the Air snub only has to deal with it's chances on winning since wasn't it like Braveheart that was the last Best Picture winner without a SAG ensemble nod?

    ReplyDelete
  17. All great points. Myles, you make a great point. I think back to Tommy Lee Jones a few years back for that reminder.

I'm hoping, as an avid Hurt Locker proponent, that it's Anthony Mackie in the Supporting Role.

But it's coming. Where? I don't know yet.

  18. I was surprise that the AC considered Marion Cotillard as a possible nominee for Best Actress here instead of Gabourey. So I totally see it coming when they excluded her for their lead actress nominees. Everyone knows that the Globes sometimes goes Lead with an actress that's in a musical only to fill their Lead Actress in a Comedy/Musical category (best example? Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2002 for Chicago, totally supporting but went on Lead and obviously she was meant to lose in that award ceremony).
With that being said, I wouldn't count out Marion for the Best Supporting Actress category this year, but if she doesn't make it and Julianne goes inteast, I wouldn't be surprise either. Julianne Moore totally deserves Oscar recognition, BUT for a Lead category. I hope one day it'll be Julianne's year! Whe she finally swepts all of the awards, just like Helen Mirren and Kate Winslet. She deserved that kind of recognition and not only for a supporting role with minimun screen time. And think she's so much better than that.
    -
And congrats to Precious! Even thou Gabby and Mo'Nique are the only ones who deserved individual recognition, the whole cast in the movie is awesome. Everyone did their best and totally nailed it.
    -
About UP IN THE AIR, yeah. This wouldn't hurt its possibility for a BP nod. I found it quite pleasant that they decided to nominee other with a bigger cast than theirs. I wouldn't be happy to see another Million Dollar Baby-like nomination for Best Cast, when they obviously did that for Clint Eastwood, since both Hilary and Morgan where individually nominated. But since UP IN THE AIR got individual noms for George, Vera and Anna, they felt that was enough recognition.
