-Inglourious Basterds and Nine led the way...thoughts?

  1. It's more or less who the big contenders are right now, give or take some of the less prestigious categories...

  2. Happy for:

    Julianne Moore and Colin Firth
    Avatar
Quentin Tarantino and Inglourious Basterds as a whole
A Serious Man (only 2 noms though? oh well)
    Marion Cotillard
    Fantastic Mr. Fox
    Max Records and WTWTA

    Bleh:
Clint Eastwood continuing to be worshipped.
Only a costume citation for Bright Star.
The little love for 500 Days of Summer.

    What?:
The Young Victoria for all the noms it received.

  3. yeah, not enough love for 500 days or WTWTA

Bailee Madison attention though ... let's hope it's the start!

  4. Very, very nice set of predictions. I will probably end up liking this list of predictions more than the Oscars when they come out.

Obviously the love for Inglourious Basterds excites me, but that seems to be the norm for all critics groups. It's appreciation seems to be growing with each passing day.

I like Matt Damon's nomination (I felt he was better than Freeman), and Cotillard in the supporting category is good to see.

It's good to see The Lovely Bones nominated for Visual Effects (especially now that we know it won't be nominated when Oscars come 'round), but I was hoping it would be nominated for best sound. The category is pretty stacked, but I felt the sound was the best part of The Lovely Bones.

  6. I don't really understand this...

So Saorise Ronan is nominated for Best Actress and Best Young Actress. But since she's the only one nominated in both places, isn't it practically default that she wins Best Young Actress?

Same with Up... it's the only film nominated as Best Picture and Best Animated Picture. Isn't it then guaranteed Best Animated Picture?

    I don't get it.

  7. It's their prerogative to nominate as they feel appropriate...I'm not sure I get what you don't understand...

  8. haha, yeah, it's just the situation.

Should she not be nominated for best actress because she's young? Or vice versa, be left out of the young category because she's just that good?

No way around it, but I agree it should make her a lock to win.

Same thing happened when Life is Beautiful was up for BP and Foreign Film. Same thing will most likely happen this year when UP is up for BP and animated

  9. It just doesn't make sense logically. If she's the ONLY person nominated for Best Young Actress and Best Actress, it would seem that she is obviously the winner of Best Young Actress... because she also has a nomination in a more competitive field that doesn't judge based on age. It's like she's locked to win it.

And if Up is the only animated film good enough to be nominated for Best Picture, then it should be locked to win Best Animated Feature. You know what I mean?

  10. I think a win for Cotillard is very possible. The Weinstein people should realize by Cotillard's recent nomination with the Detroit Film Critics and this that any chance at a win for the Nine ladies is Cotillard in Supporting. This will however hurt Cruz or Farmiga.
