Really, truly fantastic. Although the film itself was only great, the sheer brilliance of all the production values outweighed any weakness in the film.
Actually, I personally thought that much of the film was quite well-written, especially the majority of Jake's narration. Of all the lines in the film, the one that bothered me the most was the one dealing with "shock and awe".
I was pleasantly surprised by the caliber of Worthington's performance - he was great in it. I was extremely impressed by Saldana (I may be nominating her, not sure yet), and I was a little disappointed by Stephen Lang's Quaritch (even though he was still amazing in it).
I actually think that the first 40 +/- minutes of the film was incredible, and the weakest part of the film was Weaver's death sequence (even though it was necessary to set up the film's ending).
The final battle sequence was astounding, although a bit too characteristic of "Return of the Jedi" in terms of cross-cutting.
Also, I personally thought that the second half of the film was actually much more slow-paced than the first half (which, in my opinion, was fast-paced). I'm not sure if this is due to the fact that the footage I saw before going in was all from the first half of the film, or for another reason.
Overall, an extremely emotional, breathtaking, and beautiful film experience. I love "Avatar" through and through.
10/10, A, ****/****, whatever other grading device you could add, lol.
It was like on big joyous celebration of cinema. I can't post my full review here as it's too long. But I'll summarize
On a technical level, the film has no equal. It's also the most visually beautiful film I've ever seen, and that's a huge statement coming from me. For the longest time I felt that the Lord of the Rings trilogy held that title of most beautiful film ever made, but Avatar beat it out.
The story, while familiar in a lot of ways, was really moving and emotional. It had a big heart to it. The kind of heart you don't find in many movies these days. It was so magical. The ending, which I won't spoil of course, is one of the biggest moments of pure cinematic joy and magic I've ever seen. In fact, there are so many moments like this in the film it's hard ti single anything out. But there were a lot of parts where I couldn't help but smile and get a little emotional because it was just so great.
This is easily my favorite film of the year, narrowly beating out The Road as my favorite of the year due to the sheer scope and experience of seeing it in 3D on the big screen. Two words really describe it best. Joyous and magical. It's just incredible. I can't wait to see it again.
We had it down here in Australia on Wednesday and over the past three days I can tell you the buzz down under is enormous. People everywhere love it.
Sure by critics and reviews Hurt Locker and Up In The Air are frontrunners at the moment, but wait til Avatar reaches a massive box office success worldwide. We may just see a sudden surge of people wanting Avatar to win come Oscar time in February. The next two months could see a massive change to a pretty predictable season so far.
Personally I agree there is a very flawed plotline, but not anywhere near enough to not consider this a masterpiece. A must see and revolutionary cinema.
I think we need to let the film be out for more than 2 days before we starting giving it this "voice of a generation" labels, but that being said, it very well might end up being looked at as such...
I remember crying at one point in the film, and it really had nothing to do with the story or characters or anything like that -- it was because I realized that the film is kind of the equivalent of "Star Wars" for our generation. I understand what you mean, Joey, but to me personally, that's kind of what it's like.
Although I love the hell out of this film, I can't say it's the best of the year. For me, that would personally be "Inglourious Basterds", although this comes in at 2nd on my list.
Indeed, I'm just saying no good film does its damage in the first 48 hours, both in terms of money and in terms of respect. The movie will be considered as one of those types of films if it lives large for the foreseeable future and in a couple years, we still look at it and go "wow".
i'll be damned if this doesn't sweep the technical oscars. and it definitely deserves best picture/director noms, probably deserving of best picture win.
my personal theory is that the big three categories will be really split this year. I get the feeling that Avatar will build up a lot of momentum. Avatar takes Best Picture, Kathryn Bigelow wins Best Director, and Jason Reitman wins Best Adapted Screenplay.
This movie hit me like no other has before. I was emotionally connected to everything, the storyline included. I walked into this movie expecting a so-so story and weak dialogue but with amazing visuals, but any doubts were absolutely shattered when you enter Pandora and the lives of the Na'vi. Then the story became a beautiful tale with absolute originality in my opinion.
I thought that Zoe Saldana was perfection! I hope she gets recognized in some form before the awards season is over because she was brillant as her character.
I enjoyed every minute of Avatar. The whole thing is an amazing experience that has to be seen on a movie theater. All of the technical categories will definitely land in the hands of this visually masterpiece. Since the LOTR saga I haven't seen this kind of effects that actually looks so real. I do have one issue. The story is as old as time. It's like "i've heard it all before". So, don't be that mad because someone gave away one or two things that happens in the movie. Because after the movie finish there's nothing new about the story itself. Does anyone here think the same?? Anyway, I believe the movie is wonderful and super entertaining like any other this year. BUT there's nothing original about the main story and message.
Who would you like to see be the main villain in the next Batman film?

This movie is like nothing I've seen before. Hours after I came back from the cinema I stood shocked and overwhelmed with emotions.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad that I'm not the only one who was impressed by Worthington's performance. He was really great and very natural.

I believe that "Avatar" is to our generation what "Star Wars" is our parents' generation and what "King Kong" is to our grandparents' generation.

It was alright. Nothing spectacular. Visually great, but the weakest story Cameron has written.
