It's a week of high profile releases, and yet the one that I feel the strongest about was criminally under seen. It got some good buzz upon release, but it never translated to box office success. It's in the running for some Oscar attention now, and today it's my PICK OF THE WEEK. It's:
The Cove
Any animal lover will be outraged by what you see in this film, which combines the talking head documentary with the action packed "people take action" documentary in order to present this doc on the quest to stop the slaughter of dolphins in a secret cove in Japan. It's well made and a very important film to see, so I implore you to seek it out.
-The only other film I recommend this week is a film that's taken its lumps since its release. It's Public Enemies and while I liked it more when it first came out then I do now, it still is a film that does more right than it does wrong. People feel pretty strongly one way or the other about it, so you likely already know if this is a movie you'll be picking up on DVD or not.
-All the other releases this week don't do too much for me. There's the latest Harry Potter movie, called Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and if you like Potter, you'll like it, but if you don't, you'll likely be confused or just bored. There's Julie & Julia, which features another good Meryl Streep performance, but not much else. There's a small horror film called Carriers out that I didn't dislike, but it didn't do enough for me in the end. Lastly, there's World's Greatest Dad, which I was a little harsh to when I reviewed it earlier in the year. It still doesn't work for me, but I liked it better the second time around, so if you like black comedies and Robin Williams, this may be for you.
-My Vintage pick this week is, in honor of the release Friday of The Lovely Bones, a film that reminds me a lot of it, which is What Dreams May Come. I think this is a very underrated film, and one that deals with the afterlife in a way that won't bug anyone on either side of the religion scale (I'm agnostic pretty much, and it works as a lovely and beautiful film for me). If you like good melodrama, this is for you, so check it out if you never have.
-What will you be watching on DVD this week?

I think I have The Cove coming in my netflix either tomorrow or thursday so I am anxious to see it. I saw Food Inc. the other day and loved it and everyone says that The Cove is just as good if not better. So we'll see!
ReplyDeleteI also am excited about seeing Public Enemies as it was one of those summer movies that I wanted to see but never got around to seeing (probably because I went to see Inglourious Basterds twice :-)).
Not a bad week for dvds I'd say. My fiance really loved Julie and Julia and I didnt think it was half-bad either!
It's an above average week, just because of the variety and how good The Cove is...
ReplyDeleteHow about a shout out for the Criterion Collection release of Desplechin's A Christmas Tale. That's gonna be on repeat in my house.
ReplyDeleteI featured it in my article last week, when it got released...
ReplyDeleteWhoops you're so right! How embarrassing. Apologies!
ReplyDeleteNo worries.
