The Weinsteins aren't ready to give up on Nine...could that be good for its Oscar chances?

Well, maybe, maybe not, but this article in The Hollywood Reporter makes it clear that they still think it has a future in the awards season and won't just let the film die like other perceived (I say perceived since it's too early to call Nine a failure) disappointments, namely Amelia and The Lovely Bones. We'll see what happens, but The Weinstein Co. is keeping the film in a large amount of theaters, and it's a good article to check out, so, well...check it out.
-Do you think Nine will end up with a Best Picture nomination?

  1. "We are going to hold our theaters as planned. The movie is working."?? … Nine is indeed a disappointment and a bad movie, yes it is, not their performances wich I found very outstanding(Penelope,Daniel D.L, Marion C.), but them get lost in this so disconnected world
… what he means with is working? Showing it in all the theatres around the country won’t change that fact… regarding to the oscar nomination in my personal opinion I would not nominated it… maybe in some technical categories, but definitely no for the best film… let see what the members have to say…

  2. To put in simplest terms, Nine has so far made something like $5 million on an $64 million budget, and the profits are going down, not up. That is a very definition of a bomb. The Academy may not judge on financial success entirely, but you'd better believe they take it into account. That along with the split-down-the-middle mixed reviews means any nominations outside the artistic/technical categories is going to be an incredibly uphill battle. If it does get into Best Picture, it'll be as a space filler only.

  3. Indeed, especially since voters received their ballots right as the worst reviews came in. I wouldn't call Nine dead, but it's now fighting for one of the last 2 or 3 slots in the Best Picture race, as opposed to trying to become a contender to actually win...

I think it still has a shot at acting noms as well - particularly for Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard, especially if the Academy places the latter in the supporting category.

  5. I think they may split the vote if so, but we shall see.

  6. I think that "Nine" could be like this year's "Dreamgirls", getting a number of nods for techs along with a nomination or two for its actors.

As of right now, I have Cotillard winning for her performance in the film, and I really hope they don't split vote.

  7. I think it won't get as many nods as Dreamgirls, but it's an apt point...
